Making Tax Digital for Income Tax is coming.
Are you ready?
From April 2026, HMRC is changing how some self-employed people and landlords report income. We’ll confirm your start date, get you set up with digital records, and handle your quarterly updates — so you can stay compliant without the stress.
Does MTD apply to me?
My self-employed and/or property lettting turnover is…
£50,000+
- You may need to start keeping digital records and sending quarterly updates from 6 April 2026.
My self-employed and/or property lettting turnover is…
£30,000+
- You may need to start from April 2027, but setting up early helps you avoid the rush and get comfortable with the process.
If you’re unsure whether this applies to you, ask us — we’ll quickly confirm your position.
What does this mean?
MTD introduces new requirements you must follow… or potentially face penalties.
More frequent deadlines
Instead of sorting everything once a year, you’ll need to keep records up to date and submit a summary to HMRC every 3 months.
You’ll need digital records
Paper notes and shoebox receipts won’t cut it — you’ll need software (or a compliant spreadsheet setup) to track income and expenses.
More admin
If your records aren’t kept tidy throughout the year, MTD can mean more chasing, more time at the laptop, and a higher risk of missed deadlines.
The new quartly cycle
You’ll need to send HMRC a quarterly update (a summary of income and expenses).
We’ll handle the submissions and keep you on track.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is Making Tax Digital (MTD) for Income Tax?
It’s a change to how some self-employed people and landlords report income to HMRC using digital records and quarterly updates.
Who does MTD for Income Tax apply to?
It applies based on your qualifying income/turnover and whether you’re self-employed, a landlord, or both.
When do I have to start?
Your start date depends on your income level and HMRC’s rollout rules. We’ll confirm your exact start date during onboarding.
What do I need to do differently day-to-day?
You’ll need to record income and expenses digitally as you go, rather than relying on paper notes or end-of-year catch-up.
What are “quarterly updates” — are they tax bills?
Quarterly updates are summaries sent to HMRC. They are not your final tax calculation, which is still finalised through your annual return.
Do I need accounting software like Xero?
Not always, but you will need an MTD-compliant way to keep digital records and submit updates. We’ll recommend the simplest setup for you.
What happens if I don’t comply?
You could face penalties, missed deadlines, and extra admin. It’s best to get set up early so the process is smooth.
What does “per income stream” mean?
Each trade or rental business is treated separately. For example, one trade + one rental property = two income streams.
Can you handle everything for me?
Yes — we can set up your system, keep you compliant, and submit quarterly updates and your annual tax return (depending on your plan).
Can I cancel if it’s not for me?
Yes. There’s no long-term contract. Fees already paid for work completed aren’t refundable if you leave mid-year.
I record my income and expenses on a spreadsheet - can I still use this?
Yes, we can submit your spreadsheet data using our software and still meet the new Making Tax Digital rules.
